About Me

Hello! I'm Theresa, a passionate genealogist dedicated to helping others explore their family history. With over 40 years of experience in family research, I've helped countless individuals and families uncover their ancestral roots.

Portrait of Genealogist

Being in a research environment, having an enquiring mind, and being able to think “outside the box” put me in good stead to grasp a deep understanding of genealogy...

Research Experience

I have spent almost four decades working for British Glass, based in Sheffield. The company is a trade federation with a research arm carrying out cutting edge R&D into glass technology. Having worked my way up from humble librarian, I am now regarded as an “industry expert” by my peers (especially in the area of industry standards) and my speciality is finding the obscure – a positive talent which has served me well over the years – but a skill especially fortunate for a family historian!

Through our own library and archives (and others), over the years I have assisted many in tracing their ancestors through industry. Everyone had to work to survive and you may be surprised to learn, for example, that Sheffield Cutlers’ Hall holds apprenticeship records dating back some 500 years or more!

I have had the pleasure of helping many trace their families (skeletons in the cupboard are a particular hobby of mine), “lost” people, “forgotten” people (see my blog concerning Frederick Thomas) using the skills and experience I have learned over time, with a dollop of good old-fashioned “nouse” thrown in, and a sense of determination (being likened to a “dog with a bone” status by some, which I take as a great compliment!). So, if you feel you could use my skills, please drop me a line – big job or small, if I can help you can rest assured I will.

Genealogy

Genealogy has given me a better understanding of who I am, where my roots originated and indeed an identity previously unknown to me. Therefore, wanting to learn and take the subject as far as I could, I enrolled to study with the IHGS (Institute of Genealogical & Heraldic Studies) where I completed the course and obtained the Higher Certificate in Genealogy – the highest theoretical genealogical qualification of its kind in the UK.

You can find my name (T Green) listed on their graduates’ page: www.ihgs.ac.uk/about-graduates

I am always on the lookout for what’s new – and that keeps me busy on a daily basis. So many new datasets and databases are coming online on a regular basis it’s hard to keep up with it all – therefore, I regularly sign up for new classes on topics of particular interest, I visit the archives (not just the local archives, but special collections further afield, such as the Borthwick collections in York, the British Library, National Archives etc) on a regular basis, sign up for news bulletins and do my best to take an active role in local meetings, societies etc. It really is a full time job keeping abreast of all the information coming through – and that is only a small part of what’s really out there!

So, whatever your interest is, if you find you have hit that proverbial brick wall, please get in touch and if I can help, or point you in the right direction, I certainly will.

For examples of how I have helped unravel the most complex of genealogical problems, see the case studies page and please read my article on my Adventures in Ireland which was published in Family Tree magazine May 2014.
