5 Essential Tips for Beginning Genealogists

As I first delved into ancestry, I looked with rose coloured glasses at a branch of the family through my maternal side. My great-great-great grandmother, Amelia was born in 1815 in Dundee. She had 7 children, the youngest, John born in 1861. Having known nothing of her side of the family at all, I started digging – and soon found myself with a pile of information from various sources – so naturally, a picture of her formed in my head.

1939 National Register

Findmypast has just unveiled its latest release – the 1939 National Register – the closest thing to a census there is. It’s a few years since the 1911 England & Wales census became available online, and we’ve got several years to wait before we’ll see the 1921 Census – so it’s a great time to launch the Register. It went live on Monday 2nd November.

Many people will discover they have an ancestor who entered into an asylum. I am no different, I discovered a young chap (Peter) who sadly died in 1905 at the tender age of 21 in Abergavenny Lunatic Asylum. I ask myself how on earth did that happen?
